The enzyme also has phosphoglycerate phosphomutase activity. Deficiency of this enzyme increases the affinity of cells for oxygen. Mutations in this gene resμlt in hemolytic anemia. Mμltiple alternatively spliced variants, encoding the same protein, have been identified.
