The viral RNA genomes are segmented into large (L), medium (M), and small (S) segments. The tripartite segments encode an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), two envelope glycoproteins (Gn and Gc), and a nucleocapsid (N) protein.  Orthohantaviruses are transmitted to humans when viral infectious particles from the excreta of infected rodents are inhaled through the respiratory tract.
