A member of the malic enzymes family, ME3 utilizes manganese and magnesium as cofactors and is expressed in tissues that divide at a low rate. The gene encoding ME3 maps to human chromosome 11, which houses over 1,400 genes and comprises nearly 4% of the human genome.
