Induced by sterol, PMVK participates in isopentenyl diphosphate biosynthesis via the mevalonate pathway. PMVK catalyzes the conversion of mevalonate 5-phosphate into mevalonate 5-diphosphate in the fifth reaction of the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway.
