Megakaryocytopoiesis is the cellular development process that leads to platelet production. TPO is necessary for megakaryocyte proliferation and maturation, as well as for thrombopoiesis. TPO is the ligand for MLP\/C_MPL, the product of myeloproliferative leukemia virus oncogene.
