SAMHD1 was identified as the restriction factor that renders most myeloid cells refractory to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Expression of the viral protein Vpx in refractory cells targets SAMHD1 for ubiquitin-mediated degradation and relieves HIV restriction.
