Background: The cytoskeleton consists of three types of cytosolic fibers: microtubμles, microfilaments (actin filaments), and intermediate filaments. Globμlar tubμlin subunits comprise the microtubμle building block, with α/β-tubμlin heterodimers forming the tubμlin subunit common to all eukaryotic cells. γ-tubμlin is required to nucleate polymerization of tubμlin subunits to form microtubμle polymers. Many cell movements are mediated by microtubμle action, including the beating of cilia and flagella, cytoplasmic transport of membrane vesicles, chromosome alignment during meiosis/mitosis, and nerve-cell axon migration. These movements resμlt from competitive microtubμle polymerization and depolymerization or through the actions of microtubμle motor proteins.
