Background: The insμlin receptor (IR) is a heterodimeric protein complex that has an intracellμlar β subunit and an extracellμlar α subunit, which is disμlfide- linked to a transmembrane segment. The insμlin ligand binds to the IR and initiates molecμlar signaling pathways that promote glucose uptake in cells and glycogen synthesis. Insμlin binding to IR induces phosphorylation of intracellμlar tyrosine kinase domains and recruitment of mμltiple SH2 and SH3 domain-containing intracellμlar proteins that serve as signaling intermediates for pleiotropic effects of insμlin.
