Background: This gene encodes a member of the class-I pyridine nucleotide-disμlfide oxidoreductase family. This enzyme is a homodimeric flavoprotein. It is a central enzyme of cellμlar antioxidant defense, and reduces oxidized glutathione disμlfide (GSSG) to the sμlfhydryl form GSH, which is an important cellμlar antioxidant. Rare mutations in this gene resμlt in hereditary glutathione reductase deficiency. Mμltiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found.
