Clostridium tetani is a ubiquitous, obligate anaerobic bacterium. Its extremely resistant spores reach the ground through faeces and are able to survive there for years. The pathogen usually enters the host through contaminated wounds. In the presence of nutrients and anaerobic conditions, spores will convert back to the vegetative form which then produces tetanospasmin, a very strong neurotoxin which causes an increase in neuromuscular stimulation.
Tetanus toxoid is highly purified Tetanus toxin from Clostridium tetani, chemically detoxified by treatment with formaldehyde. The toxoid is presented in glycine buffer at pH 9.5.
The antigen BA108VS is suitable for the detection of IgG antibodies against the causative agent of tetanus.
